Empa – Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology

Host Institution and Project Coordination

Empa is the interdisciplinary research institute for materials science and technology development of the ETH Domain. Its mission: to develop materials and technologies for a sustainable future. Empa’s R&D activities link applications-oriented research to the practical implementation of new ideas in the areas of nanostructured, “smart” materials and surfaces, environmental, energy and sustainable building technologies – Cleantech applications – as well as biotechnology and medical technology.

Experts in Knowledge Graph Technology

The University of St. Gallen is the leading business university in Switzerland. The recently founded Institute of Computer Science takes advantage of the entrepreneurial tradition and mind-set of the University of St. Gallen and combines it with in-depth technical knowledge and further development of cutting-edge technologies. At the Computer Science department, we are interested in basic research as well as interdisciplinary projects that show that technology can make a positive impact in society.

With its 11 Bachelor’s degree programmes, 3 PEI study programmes and 9 research institutes, the HES-SO Valais-Wallis is a leading hub of skills and innovation, preparing students for the world of work, and contributing both to economic and social development and to the creation of jobs within the canton. The HES-SO Valais-Wallis, which enables students to study in Valais, has around 2,800 students and is made up of 5 schools: School of Art, School of Management, School of Engineering, School of Health Sciences, School of Social Work.

HES-SO Valais-Wallis, through its Institute of Informatics, contributes to the implementation of the WISER digital ecosystem, providing its expertise in knowledge management, API development and integration of sustainability digital resources.

ZHAW is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities of applied sciences in Switzerland. The School of Management and Law (SML) at ZHAW delivers innovative and interdisciplinary education, research and consulting in management, economics, and law. In collaboration with private and public organisations, SML develops innovative concepts for problem solutions in the field of business and administration, promoting sustainable development and corporate responsibility.

Dedicated to sustainable business development, SML identifies unmet needs regarding GHG accounting and explores different business models to facilitate access to GHG knowledge for all types of business and public organisation, while also ensuring economic attractiveness and long-term viability of the digital ecosystem.

Paul Scherrer Institute

Experts in Computational Tools for Environmental Assessments

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the multidisciplinary research institute for natural and engineering sciences of the ETH Domain. It conducts basic and applied research in the fields of matter and materials, human health, and energy and the environment. Current research is focusing on solutions for integrating renewables into the existing energy supply. These activities are supplemented by analyses giving a comprehensive assessment of energy systems.

In its mission of addressing all aspects of energy use with the aim to make energy supplies more sustainable, PSI is proud to support the development of a digital ecosystem that will simplify the access to GHG knowledge for all interested stakeholders of society.

Its activities include publishing and maintaining the ecoinvent Database, which currently contains over 18’500 reliable life cycle inventory datasets covering a diverse range of sectors on global and regional levels. Swiss Datacenter Efficiency Association

The Swiss Datacenter Efficiency Association (SDEA) is an alliance of industrial and academic organizations that came together to create a unique, integrated and modular approach to full-stack datacenter energy efficiency and emission certification. SDEA Label originated from a digitalswitzerland challenge in 2018 with the objective to make Switzerland an attractive host for energy-efficient and low-emission datacenters. SDEA is supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy through the program SwissEnergy and by premium sponsorship from Schneider Electric and SICPA.

SWICO

Swico Recycling is a national, not-for-profit system for taking back discarded electronic and electrical equipment used in the areas of Informatics, Consumer Electronics, Office, Communications, Graphics Industry and Measurement and Medicine Technology. As a take-back system, Swico Recycling works closely with retailers, private and public collection points, logistics and recycling companies, as well as specialist environment agencies and auditors.

Swico Recycling has been an internationally recognised model for take-back systems since it was established in 1994, as it is characterised by high collection and recycling rates, strict processing rules and quality inspections, as well as investments in research and development.
